| Museo del Prado
The Museo del Prado is the most famous museum of the capital. It contains a wide variety of European art from the 12th till the 19th century. The museum has over 10.000 art objects on display. Their most impressive collection is the one of paintings, which is said to be the finest collection of Spanish art in the world. The most famous painting of the collection is called “Las Meninas”, created by the Spanish artist Diego Velázquez who was born and raised in Seville. In 2019 the Museo del Prado celebrates its 200th anniversary, which makes it one of the oldest museums in the world. The building has been renovated during the years but it still has the authentic look of its early years.
Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum
Another world-class museum located in Madrid is the Thyssen-Bornemisza museum. It is the second museum within the golden triangle and mainly covers the 20th century. Art works including 1600 paintings from all over the world. Next to their share in the golden triangle, the museum has a collection of their own. The art collection is in fact two different collections merged together. This leads to a wide collection covering eight centuries. It is not focused on one stream or time which makes it very diverse.
Queen Sofia Art Centre
The last piece of the triangle is the Centro de Arte Reina Sofia Madrid. It was opened in 1992 and contains Spanish art from the 20th century. It is focused on modern art and has collections of the two most important Spanish artists of the 20th century: Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí. A special feature of this museum is that it has a special library which is focused on art.
